One of the most talked-about systems on an electric vehicle is the battery system. How long does it last? How does it work? How do I know the battery is reliable? Well, we’re here to answer all of those questions! After years of research and development, BYD has created the Blade Battery – but what’s so special about it? Blade Battery offers incredible new levels of safety, durability, and performance. Read on to find out how it works!
BYD have been developing and perfecting battery technology over two decades – with over 3 million battery powered cars produced, BYD is a firm market leader in this field, and it’s not hard to see why! Born out of relentless research, the Blade Battery innovation is one that would change the EV industry completely.
BYD is all about safety; from their in-car safety systems to what lies underneath. The BYD Blade Battery uses lithium iron-phosphate (LFP) as the active material which offers a much higher level of safety than a typical lithium-ion battery. LFP has superb thermal stability and is incredibly durable which is reinforced by the long, flat design of the battery itself for improved space utilization. The Blade Battery offers a hugely extended electric range and fantastic power density for optimal performance and efficiency and designed with ‘honeycomb-like’ aluminium to remain rigid.
That’s all great, but how long will the battery last? Great question! The BYD Blade Batteries have an incredible 10-year track record and millions of road miles so far! The batteries are built to last up to 30 years of life and come with an 8 year warranty as standard. To test the durability and safety of the Blade Battery, BYD Europe conducted their own ‘Nail Penetration Test’ comparing the Blade Battery to a typical NCM Lithium-ion battery – see the results for yourself in the video below!
| Characteristic | BYD Bade Battery (LFP) | Traditional Batteries (NCM) |
| Safety | Passes nail penetration test without smoke or flames | Fire risk in extreme conditions |
| Cycle Duration | Over 5,000 charging cycles | 1,000-2,000 Cycles |
| Thermal stability | Surface temperature 30-60c in extreme cases | Possible thermal runaway above 200c |
| Oxygen Emissions | No emissions (Lower fire risk) | Release of oxygen in case of overheating |
| Environmental Impact | More sustainable materials (iron and phosphate) | Cobalt and nickel (limited resources) |
| Space Efficiency | Plus 50% compared to traditional parcels | Standard |
| Degradation | Very slow over time | Faster after 3-5 years |
Safety isn't the only advantage. The Blade Battery is engineered for longevity, offering more than 5,000 charging cycles and slower degradation than many conventional EV batteries. Its efficient design maximises space within the vehicle, contributes to improved structural strength, and helps maintain strong performance over many years of use. Backed by extensive testing and a comprehensive warranty, the Blade Battery represents a significant step forward in electric mobility, making EV ownership more practical, dependable, and future-ready.
