Can windscreen chips cause an MOT failure?

Yes, having a windscreen chip can cause an MOT failure; however, it depends on where the chip is and its size.

The current guidelines state:

  • Driver’s Line of Vision (Zone A): A 290mm-wide vertical strip which is centred on the steering wheel and swiped by the wipers. Any chip or damage larger than 10mm is marked as an automatic MOT failure and will need to be repaired immediately to get passed.
  • Rest of the Swept Area (Zone B): For any area across the windscreen that is cleaned by the wiper blades. Any damage that is larger than 40mm will also cause a failure and will need a repair.

  • Outside the Swept Area: Any chips or cracks outside the wiper reach normally doesn’t cause a MOT failure, unless the driver’s view or threatens the structure integrity of the vehicle. Small chips outside critical areas usually result in an advisory, rather than an MOT failure.
