How do Snows Accident Repair Centre fix corroded alloy wheels?

Close

To fix corroded alloy wheels, the process involves cleaning the wheel, removing the corrosion through sanding or blasting, applying primer and paint. This is then sealed with a clear coat. There may be an added cost for acid dipping, depending on how corroded the alloy wheels are.

What is acid dipping and why would my alloy wheels need it?

Close

Acid dipping is a process used to remove paint, rust, and other contaminants from metal surfaces by immersing the object in a bath of acid. This process is particularly effective for cleaning and preparing metal surfaces for further treatments, such as painting or powder coating.

For alloy wheels, acid dipping might be necessary for several reasons:

1. Paint Removal: If the alloy wheels have old, chipped, or damaged paint, acid dipping can strip off the paint thoroughly, providing a clean surface for new paint or coating.

2. Rust and Corrosion Removal: Alloy wheels can develop rust and corrosion over time, especially if they are frequently exposed to road salt or harsh weather conditions. Acid dipping removes rust and corrosion, restoring the wheel's surface.

3. Surface Preparation: To ensure proper adhesion of new paint or powder coating, the wheel's surface must be clean and free from contaminants. Acid dipping cleans the surface more effectively than mechanical methods alone.

4. Restoration: For wheels that have accumulated grime, brake dust, or other tough contaminants over time, acid dipping can restore them to a like-new condition.

It's important to note that acid dipping should be performed by professionals, as the process involves handling strong acids that can be hazardous if not managed correctly. Additionally, after acid dipping, the wheels must be neutralised, rinsed, and thoroughly dried to prevent any residual acid from causing damage.
