What is the difference between a plug-in hybrid car and a mild hybrid car?

A plug-in hybrid vehicle works by using an electric battery, an electric motor, and a petrol engine. The vehicle needs to be plugged into the mains to charge the battery to drive. 

A mild hybrid vehicle also has a petrol or a diesel engine, with a small electric motor and battery, which offers improved efficiency and range. As it has regenerative battery technology, it can restore some battery charge while you brake smoothly. You do not have to charge a mild hybrid vehicle, making it ideal if you can't keep up with multiple fuel types. 

Which Volvo models are plug-in hybrids?

Volvo currently has the XC60 and the XC90 models available as plug-in hybrids. 

About the XC60

The XC60 is an excellent choice if you are looking for a vehicle that combines ample space, a sophisticated but relaxing interior feel, and an athletic and modern exterior.

Both the plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid versions of the XC60 offer great fuel consumption. The plug-in hybrid option offers a fuel consumption of 313.9 mpg (combined, T6 AWD trim), and the mild hybrid option offers a 37.7 mpg fuel consumption (combined). 

The exterior is designed to create a powerful but minimalist look. Key features include chiselled curves around the wheel arches and flush windows to create a seamless look. 

A high ground clearance and high wheel arches offer great visibility of the roads, while making it easier to load and offload items. 

The boot is very spacious, offering up to 483 litres and can increase to up to 1,543 litres when the back seats are folded down. 

Inside, the XC60 has a cockpit that is handcrafted to create a sophisticated and relaxing feel. With the free-standing central display equipped to allow you to seamlessly connect your phone to the central display to stay entertained on the roads. About the XC40

The Volvo XC40 is perfect if you are looking for an SUV with a distinctive look, excellent practical space, and a relaxing ambience. 

The XC40 is only available as a mild hybrid car but delivers 42.8 mpg fuel consumption (combined).

About the XC90

The Volvo XC90 is the perfect vehicle if you are looking for a minimalist design with easy access to get in and out of the vehicle and a calming atmosphere inside.

The XC90 is available as a plug-in hybrid and a mild hybrid fuel type. The plug-in hybrid fuel consumption is 235.4 mpg (combined), and the mild hybrid offers 33.6 mpg fuel consumption (combined). 

Enhancing the classic Volvo exterior look, the Volvo XC90 has been designed with a few changes. The headlights are slimmed down, the grille has a fresh graphic, with a sculptured hood and updated front bumper and fenders. 

Available with seven seats, it has a capacity of 244 litres, offering up to 1,941 litres when the back seats are folded down. For further room, there is a 31-litre storage area under the floor.
