How Do You Charge an Electric Vehicle?

Charging an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle is becoming increasingly easier as time goes on.

There are two options you can choose to charge your car. These are at home or by using public charging stations.

How to charge an electric vehicle at home?

If you choose to lease an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle on the Motability Scheme, they will arrange a home charge point and a standard installation as part of your lease, so you can start charging your vehicle at home straight away.

Using a home charge point is easy to use. Depending on which home charge point you receive and which vehicle you own, it will only be a few simple steps. These consist of setting your target charge level, scheduling when your vehicle will charge, then plugging the cable into your vehicle.

You can read our electric charging guide for more information.

Electric Charging Options

How to charge an electric vehicle in public?

If you can not install a charge point at home, the Motability Scheme will provide you with access to the bp plus network of over 9,000 public charge points. Conditions apply, and you can read more on the Motability Scheme website.

Or you may be on the road and discover that charging your vehicle using public charge points may be easier to fit into your usual routine.

You may have spotted electric charging points in supermarket car parks, car parks, service stations or on the street. These public charging points are designed to allow you to top up your car’s battery while you carry on with your usual routine.

Just set your target’s charge level, pay at the machine, plug the cable into your car then you will return to your vehicle charged.
