SEAT have now confirmed that 'Tarraco' is the overall winner for the name of their new seven-seat SUV to be launched this year.
The competitor names for the new model were 'Avila', which received 41,993 votes (28.74%), 'Aranda' which came third with 39,321 votes (26.91%) and 'Alboran' taking just 12,907 (8.83%) of the votes. In the end, the majority of the 146,124 fans who participated in the poll decided that 'Tarraco' was their favourite, receiving a fantastic 51,903 (35.52%) valid votes.
The #SEATseekingName vote attracted SEAT fans from 134 countries, who all participated in the final stage of this car naming campaign. The Tarraco is the first SEAT model the be named by popular vote and the fourteenth Spanish place name used to designate a brand model.
Back in 1982, the Ronda was the first SEAT model to be named after a Spanish city. 36 years later and there have been 12 more models with a place name from all over the Spanish geography: Ibiza, Malaga, Marbella, Toledo, Inca, Alhambra, Cordoba, Arosa, Leon, Altea, and the two most recent ones, Ateca and Arona.
The city 'Tarraco' has a modern day name 'Tarragona', and is the oldest Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula. This Mediterranean city is a legacy of culture, youthfulness, history and architecture, values which SEAT identifies and conveys through its vehicles.
The #SEATseekingName initiative consisted of different stages in order to define and select the best possible name for SEAT's latest creation, which both identifies its personality and brand origins. In the first stage, a total of 133,332 proposals were received from SEAT fans in 106 countries, who put forward 10,130 different Spanish place names following guidelines set by the brand.
The next stage consisted of the proposals being verified using linguistic and legal criteria, where experts ensured that the names matched SEAT brand values and conveyed the essence of the new model. Then several focus groups in the brand’s major markets were organised and further market tests were carried out in the different countries where SEAT sells its vehicles to come up with the list of four finalists.
The winning SEAT 'Tarraco' is set to be launched at the end of 2018 and will complete the brand's SUV range, already comprising of the Ateca and the Arona.
SEAT have admitted that this initiative exceeded all expectations, as they publicly thanked all who participated and shared their opinion.
