Snows Supports PLANETS Charity in the LP24 Challenge: London – Paris in 24 Hours

In the last weekend of June 2016, a team from the PLANETS charity – which is dedicated to defeating Pancreas, Liver, and NeuroEndocrine Tumours (NETs) – took on a huge challenge and cycled from London to Paris, with the aim of fundraising £25,000 for world-class care, treatment, research, and education at Southampton General Hospital.

Keen to play its part in the PLANETS “biggest ever fundraiser”, Snows donated two light commercial vehicles for the cause, in order to help transport crucial supplies, such as water, into France.

PLANETS is comprised of Team Lead, Consultant Surgeon MR Neil Pearce DM FRCS; consultant doctors; and nurses, and the charity hopes that by 2020 University Hospital Southampton will be a leading UK centre for the management of these cancers. This includes the advancement of research, purchasing vital equipment, supporting patients and families, and more. The LP24 Challenge aimed to raise funds to keep a Mobetron running, a piece of equipment used to deliver radiotherapy in the treatment of cancer. The charity campaigns to raise awareness and to ultimately eradicate these types of tumour once and for all. The team works tirelessly on its mission, and Snows is proud to support such a worthy cause.

On Thursday 23rd June, Snows' Assistant Marketing Manager Lauren Watson met PLANETS representatives at the Group head office, where the Southampton Snows Volvo and Snows SEAT dealerships are based in Second Avenue. The keys to the vans were handed over, but not before a quick photo.

Friday 24th and Saturday 25th June were huge days for PLANETS, as five patients and twenty-one doctors each cycled 300km to Paris within 24 hours, supported by family and friends throughout. They were joined by a team of drivers – Iain Wilson, Layla Stephens (co-founder of PLANETS), and Michael Cavenagh – as well as the team mechanic Sam Gupta, A&E consultant Sophie Underwood, and chef Lisa Marouzet. Assisted by two vans from Snows, a Volkswagen Transporter and Peugeot Boxer, the team transported water and energy foods (including 300 bananas from Geest Line) along the cycle route to make sure that everyone made it to the finish line.

The cyclists arrived in Paris on Saturday evening, and celebrated with a glass of champagne underneath the Eiffel Tower.

Consultant Interventional Radiologist Brian Stedman said, ‘This is the ultimate cycling challenge and, although we know it will be gruelling, to reach milestones such as obtaining the Mobetron makes all the pain worthwhile’.
