Best car for first-time drivers is the Toyota Aygo, according to research

CarGurus UK surveyed 1,000 UK drivers, all of whom had passed their driving test within the last three years and asked exactly what they wanted from their first vehicle. Experts combined this with their knowledge of the car market to see which model most closely matched the requirements identified in the survey. The most important contributing factors when purchasing surveyed individuals' first car are low cost (30%), insurance cost (27%), mileage (24%), fuel consumption (24%) and reliability (22%). Low cost was the top contributing factor for surveyed participants, who would prefer to buy outright then commit to monthly payment plans, with an ideal total budget of below £8,500.

The most leading choice of fuel type was petrol with 57% of recipients preferring an automatic gearbox. The most desirable vehicle features that came out of the survey were bluetooth connectivity, parking sensors and a reverse camera, unsurprising for those adjusting to life on the road. The top five brands rated by respondents came out as Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, and Ford.

“The best used first car for new drivers is the second generation Toyota Aygo”

Chris Knapman CarGurus UK Expert

We were recently delighted to welcome Chris Knapman to Snows Toyota in Salisbury to explain why the Toyota Aygo makes a perfect first car.

Chris explained the Toyota Aygo, a small vehicle under 3.5 metres long and 1.6 metres wide provides ease when parking and compatibility on the roads, perfect for first time drivers. The Aygo appeals to younger audiences with contrasting trims featuring black and red with either 3 or 5 doors, 4 seats and rear pop out windows; aspects Chris felt were ideal for drivers who had just passed their test. Further specification includes a 7-inch screen with both Bluetooth, and a reverse camera, combined with an easily adjustable steering wheel, ticking many of the boxes that were highlighted at priority features. Automatic X-shift is also available, allowing more anticipation when approaching lights or junctions as the driver takes control of the gears themselves, providing ease when navigating the roads for the first time. The vehicle is fairly cheap to repair should you have an accident and also cost effective to insure as it sits on the low insurance rating of 6 to 9, two great attributes Chris highlighted for new drivers.

Chris further emphasised that Toyota have an outstanding reputation for reliability, offering warranty on Aygo’s for up to 10 years when using a Toyota dealership for your servicing every 12 months or 10,000 miles. This provides new drivers with a sense of relief, not having to budget for potentially extensive repairs. Chris explained that if you purchase an Aygo that was first registered before April 2017, its low emissions mean there is zero VED or road tax to pay, helping new drivers’ financial commitments. Toyota also offer the Aygo with fitted safety senses, providing drivers with lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking, all useful safety features for those more nervous having just passed.

Chris concluded that the Aygo provides a more youthful offering and is one the experts feel fits the majority of requirements identified by individuals surveyed, making the Toyota Aygo the best first car for new drivers.

So, if you or someone you know has recently or is due to get their license why not put the survey to test and book in for a test drive with Snows Toyota.
