Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Driveline GB are a cut above the rest for M&W Meats

The first vehicles to wear the smart new livery of M&W Meats are also its first by Mercedes-Benz. One thing the Cornish wholesale butcher has not changed, though, is its acquisition method – the four Sprinters are the subject of a contract hire agreement with trusted supplier Driveline GB Ltd.

M&W Meats, which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary, moved recently to a new production facility in St Stephen. Established by Dean Myatt and his son, also Dean, the company supplies a range of premium meat products, predominantly prime beef, to retail butchers and other customers throughout Cornwall and Devon.

Driveline GB acquired the new-generation Sprinters on behalf of its valued customer, from the Mercedes-Benz Van Centre Exeter. All 314 CDI H2 L3 models with high roofs and long bodies, they were insulated and fitted with GAH refrigeration units by conversion specialist GRP Group.

A supplier of vans to M&W Meats for the best part of a decade, Driveline GB marked its own 25th anniversary last month (April). The company, which operates from a head office in St Austell, offers a comprehensive portfolio of automotive services, including van and truck rental.

Dean Myatt junior explained: “What we need, above all else, is a sturdy, dependable workhorse, but we’d had a few mechanical issues with our previous vans. Having sat down with Driveline and considered the alternatives, we decided that with its unrivalled reputation for reliability and durability the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter represented the best way forward.”

Launched last year, the latest Sprinter range incorporates ground-breaking 4G Internet connectivity. Mercedes PRO connect provides operators with access to fast, efficient and cost-effective vehicle management services, and the cutting-edge Mercedes MBUX infotainment system incorporates a user-friendly voice control function.

New Sprinter’s transformed cab interior offers the most car-like driving experience yet seen in a van, with unrivalled levels of comfort, quietness and smoothness. Meanwhile, to the multi-award-winner’s market-leading safety armoury, Mercedes-Benz has added the autonomous Active Brake Assist system with another ‘first’ in the shape of pedestrian recognition technology, and ATTENTION ASSIST, which detects drowsiness in the driver and encourages them to take breaks when tired.

Mr Myatt continued: “Driveline arranged for me to try a Sprinter and it was a real pleasure to drive. The steering was light and beautifully balanced, and in terms of quality and comfort the cab interior was a world apart from any van I’d ever been in before – I really liked the MBUX system’s touch screen, which was very easy to use.

“Our drivers couldn’t wait to get the keys to their new Sprinters, while given our Duty of Care to colleagues its reassuring to know that we’re sending them out in the safest vans on the road. What’s more, the manufacturer’s premium brand values can only complement our own company’s image.”

Mr Myatt added: “Driveline provide an amazing service. They are extremely flexible and whenever we’ve had an issue with a vehicle they’ve always pulled out all the stops for us. We’re butchers, not a transport business, so I value their expertise and support very highly indeed.”

Driveline GB strives to provide independent, single-point solutions for its customers. Richard Jacobs, who co-founded the business with Mark Kerby, said: “Mercedes-Benz is one of our preferred brands and we’ve probably bought more than 60 Sprinters over the years, both for long-term rentals and for our ‘spot hire’ fleet.

“For demanding applications involving high mileages, or, as in M&W Meats’ case, where ancillaries such as fridges put extra strain on engines, there’s simply no beating a Sprinter – where others wouldn’t stand up to the punishment, they just keep on running.”

Although Driveline GB has long experience of buying and running commercial vehicles bearing the three-pointed star, its latest Sprinters are the first it has sourced from the Mercedes-Benz Van Centre Exeter, which commenced trading from its impressive showroom in Marsh Barton last year.

“We have worked with the Retailer’s Business Development Manager Nicola Townsend in the past, though, and once again she provided a first-class service,” continued Mr Jacobs.

“Nicola arranged a three-day trial of a Sprinter demonstrator for us, and we were particularly impressed with the redesigned cab – the layout is very car-like and there’s a lot more scope to adjust the seat, so you get a nicer, more comfortable driving position, which will be particularly valuable on longer runs.

“Once we’d specified the vehicles, she also handled all of the liaison with the converter’s factory in Leeds, which was very helpful.”
